Lamborghini Recalls Premium Cars for Fuel Tank Fire Hazards
May 27, 2010 – 8:17 am
There will be exactly 428 car owners who will be concerned about this particular recall. That’s because 428 is the number of people in the world who own the 2007 -2008 Lamborghini Murcielago. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has announced a recall of these premium vehicles because of a potential fuel tank fire hazard. According to the agency, there could be a malfunctioning of the fuel pumps in these cars. The fuel pumps can collapse resulting in a leakage. If the fuel comes into contact with an ignition source, it could quickly lead to a fire and explosion.
When you consider the fact that these premium vehicles, which cost approximately $350,000 each, are capable of reaching speeds of up to 200 mph, you understand the seriousness of the problem. There have been no accidents and injuries reported yet, but Lamborghini is not taking any chances. The company has announced that it only recently discovered the problem by testing. It will be replacing fuel tanks on all the Murcielago vehicles that have been impacted by the recall.
The company insists that it has no way of knowing for certain how many of the vehicles will have this problem. According to Lamborghini, the problem will only occur because of the force of the gasoline in the tank as the driver engages in heavy accelerating or braking. That means that drivers who really believe in working their Lamborghini hard, are more likely to face this problem, than those who prefer a slower pace. However, all fuel tanks on all the Lamborghini models included in the recall will be replaced. Repairs are expected to begin in June. Owners are required to contact the dealer to schedule there repairs.
California class action lawyers will be pleased to see that the Italian automaker has acted fast to inform owners of a potential problem. That is more than can be said for several automakers, who prefer to wait until accidents and injuries have occurred to take concrete steps. (A certain Japanese automaker comes to mind.) A gas tank fire or explosion is no small matter. When you have a car speeding at 200 mph, there may be little room for any emergency maneuvers to prevent an explosion or fire.
