California DMV at the Center of Another Bribing Scandal
June 10, 2010 – 8:18 amCalifornia investigators are probing the extent of a Department of Motor Vehicles bribing scandal. A number of DMV employees are accused of taking bribes in order to give licenses to those who were not eligible for them. Investigators believe that these employees were bribed to give licenses to senior citizens, scammers and other people who were not eligible for a license.
For now, investigators believe that the scandal has tainted at least three DMV offices in California. Several elderly motorists with vision problems are believed to have been given licenses, and this is a fact that should concern not just auto safety groups, but also every Los Angeles personal injury lawyer.
Even more alarmingly, there is no information yet about the extent of the problem. Investigators have no idea what kind of numbers they are dealing with here, and how many elderly motorists with disabilities and others were given licenses. Investigators are calling the case “a growing one.”
Obviously, this scam has major repercussions for public safety. Hopefully, the investigation will be wrapped up as quickly as possible, so personal injury lawyers in Los Angeles and citizens know exactly how many motorists are out there licensed to drive, but without the abilities to do so. It’s not just the national security implications of this scam that are sobering, but also the fact that it threatens to undo so much good work that has been done in highway safety over the past few years.
This is not the first time that the California Department of Motor Vehicles has been caught with mud on its face. In January this year, a former DMV employee was arrested on a number of charges related to waiving of driving tests in return for bribes, and issuing false California drivers licenses. There have been other scams involving the California DMV in other bribery-related scandals, including one involving a DMV employee in California taking $800 to forge written exam results and issue a license.
All the highway safety efforts in the world will amount to nothing in California if the state’s DMV continues to function like the government of a Third World banana republic.
